The Four Most Common Types of Reconstructive Spine Surgery Procedures

LA Reconstructive Spine SurgeryReconstructive spine surgery (also known as spinal fusion surgery) is an umbrella term for a range of surgical procedures used to treat chronic back pain and advanced spine injuries like degenerative disc disease and scoliosis.

With the rise in cutting-edge robotic surgery techniques over the last decade, board certified Los Angeles orthopedic spine surgeon Dr. Sanjay Khurana has specialized in offering patients the most minimally invasive spine surgery procedures and treatments available in Los Angeles and around the country, to help manage chronic back pain, return to physical activity, and improve overall quality of life.

Conditions Treated With Reconstructive Spine Surgery

The most common spine conditions and injuries treated with minimally invasive spine surgery by Dr. Khurana at Los Angeles Spine Group include:

  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Spinal Instability
  • Spinal Trauma
  • Degenerative Disc Disease
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal Tumors
  • Spinal Stenosis
  • Kyphosis
  • Herniated Disc
  • Spinal Fusion and Reconstructive Spine Surgery Procedures

    XLIF (lateral lumbar interbody fusion)

With an XLIF procedure, Dr. Khurana makes an incision to access the affected vertebrae through the patient’s side for the lower (lumbar) spine. XLIF is most commonly used to correct problems of the lower spine such as degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, scoliosis, and spinal stenosis. However, the procedure is not available for treatment of L5-S1 or L4-L5, at the lowest region of the spine, for some people.

    ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion)

In an ALIF procedure, Dr. Khurana makes the incision and works on the affected portion of the spine through the front of the body (ALIF is also frequently combined with a posterior approach when an anterior entry does not provide sufficient access to the affected disc or vertebrae).

Depending on the degree of injury and degeneration, ALIF is most commonly used to treat certain forms of degenerative disc disease and spinal instability.

    Scoliosis Correction

For cases of excessive spinal curvature (50 degrees or greater), Dr. Khurana may determine that surgery is the best option, depending on the patient.

    Kyphosis Correction

Like scoliosis, kyphosis causes excessive curvature and rounding of the spine that may require a surgical correction in some cases.
