Current Spinal Surgery Treatments
During an XLIF (lateral lumbar interbody fusion) procedure, a surgeon will make a lateral (side) incision when performing spine fusion surgery. A lateral approach allows surgeons to access the lumbar (lower) back region while bypassing the nerves and muscles in the back.
Like the XLIF procedure, ALIF (anterior lumbar interbody fusion) surgery is used to perform spine fusion surgery, but the incision is made in the anterior (front) of the body.
Treatment for scoliosis is usually dependent on several factors, including the patient’s age and degree of spinal curvature. Younger patients sometimes respond to treatment with a back brace, but for patients who are older or have a spine with a curve exceeding 50 degrees, surgery may be necessary to straighten the spine.
Tumor Excision & Correction
Spinal tumors can be malignant or benign, but are fairly uncommon. These sort of tumors may not require aggressive surgical treatment or removal. However, for some major spinal tumor, there exist tumor excision treatment options usually involving pain management and spinal repair to alleviate pressure.
