Microsurgical discectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to relieve nerves pinched by a herniated disc. Also known as microdiscectomy, the procedure uses a special microscope to provide surgeons with an enlarged view of the affected disc and nerves, allowing for a more exact surgery and better results.
The goal of this microscopic surgery is the removal of herniated disc material and, in some cases, the lamina (a small piece of vertebra bone). During a microdiscectomy procedure, a spine surgeon cuts a small incision to minimize the effect of surgery on the surrounding tissue and muscle. This reduces a patient’s recovery and rehabilitation time.

Microdiscectomy can be performed on an outpatient basis, with the patient returning home on the same day of surgery. However, even if the procedure requires an overnight stay, patients are encouraged to get up from bed and walk around once the anesthesia has worn off. Typically, patients are advised to perform the following actions once they return home:
- Walk as often as comfortable; movement helps to decrease scar tissue
- Refrain from sitting longer than 30 minutes at a time; eventually, this time can increase based on Dr. Khurana’s recommendations
- Home exercise and physical therapy might be recommended by your surgeon
- Return to work within four weeks (eight weeks if your job includes physical labor)
Microdiscectomy is a popular treatment and has a proven success rate. However, the procedure is a spine surgery and includes the risks inherent to any surgery, including possible infection, possible nerve or spine damage, and reaction to anesthesia. Dr. Khurana recommends that patients have microdiscectomy when herniated disc pain is moderate versus severe in order for patients to benefit sooner. If surgery is delayed, it may take patients longer to feel the positive difference from the procedure.
